My friend died because he fell headfirst off a ladder. He was a roofer too (which means he was very proficient at using ladders but also maybe had higher odds of falling off a ladder because he was on ladders a lot).

I used to have to get on my ladder quite a bit to hang hurricane shutters. It’s not my thing at all. Eventually paid an obscene amount for impact windows because my friend’s death was always on my mind up there…

I've gotten old enough that I really don't feel comfortable going up on the roof. For a variety of reasons, the only good place to put a ladder is on the driveway, so if I fall off, it's onto concrete. That said, I'm still not ready to pay a crap load of money to get someone else to go up there 3-4 times a year to make sure the scuppers aren't clogged.

It’s almost time to clean the gutters and use my ladder. Thanks!

My dad scaled both homes on the ladder into his 60s and I’d feel immense shame if I didn’t at least try. That said I’ve been hearing one too many stories of friends falling off ladders like the latest one breaking his leg. My gf dad still has plate inside his sternum area I believe from a fall 10+ years ago and wakes up stiff everyday supposedly.

our place is a ranch style so the gutters are only ~8' or so up , we do get on the roof to sweep the valleys of leaves and seeds etc seasonally ...

it's not too bad to shuffle the ladder around . i've been considering learning to walk on stilts , certain household chores ( like gutters and picking fruit ) are part of the fantasy

And my aunt who’s in her 60s now I believe and lives in WA state giggled when she saw my roofing, piece of cake for her compared to her properties. Even offered to go up there herself when she visited. She stands at like 5’4 and 125 -/+

Family stories would go around the grapevine about how frugal she is, doing all the roofing herself when she had the home built/renovated. Her neighbors would come out and be concerned for her.

The outdoor drains that are directly connected to the sewer for rain,

Are ffin snail infested.

Huge naked snails. Which come out at night, so when I go out with the dog it becomes a minefield.

I keep them at bay by draining copious amounts of winter salt in there, which usually clears them out for a month or so. But seriously, snails? Out of all stuff to encounter, this was not on the list I expected to see.

Sluggo (iron phosphate) works great on those things and is way less harsh than salt.

I was up there in January snaking a suspected clogged toilet vent. I was 78. High work is 99% confidence. Thats why people freeze. I know this because it's happened to me.

Our house is extremely tall at the back because of the very steep grade of the lot. I will never let anyone on the roof without full safety harnesses and static anchors. Having someone splattered across the pool deck would seriously impair my future enjoyment of the property!
