I have a multigenerational woodpecker problem - they create nests by hammering holes into my foam window sealant treatments. They come back every nesting season, except for a couple of years when my fake owl scared them away. Presumably these new Gen Alpha woodpeckers are far smarter than their boomer grandparents…

So now I’m being told to call pest control, but what…I have to do this multiple times a year?

Ah yes, woodpeckers. Our cabin in Tennessee has been obliterated by those bastards over the years when they destroy the wood searching for carpenter bee larvae. Finally broke down and had Orkin spray the entire exterior for bees, which should over time, at least reduce the number of carpenter bees which I am hoping also reduce the number of destructive woodpecker attacks

Do people generally get periodic house inspections of their home?

I moved in end of 2019. Thinking about ordering a home inspection to thoroughly see what work can be done and should be attended to ASAP. My parents never did this because my dad was a handy man and took to everything for the family. I can do some stuff but more risk averse i.e., I rather have something done professionally depending rather than quick fixes so to say. For example, a part of the eaves are losing paint/peeling, do I do that myself or pay someone? Stuff like electrical work I will hire someone.

I also do not want to go into the crawl spaces or attic to inspect.

Almost 5 years now, too soon to call someone in?

A full inspection seems like overkill. If you stay on top of the regular/maintenance cleaning of the various systems in your house, it’s probably okay to wait for things to pop up, like the peeling paint on the eaves.

Finally got our outdoor front porch furniture after many months delay. Now that we live in the city and have no setback, anyone could in theory back a truck up and just take it away. Guess we will see. Perhaps this is my opportunity to adopt a more optimistic state of mind? I doubt it will persist.

I got a big boy home so now I need some big boy tools

IMG_3493.jpeg

This shït’s heavy though. I suspect I’ll still get a lot of use out of my Bosch 12v stuff.

Hoping the hackzall has enough oomph to tackle the roots taking over my back yard…because I think most days the form factor will be far more usable to me than a full size sawzall.

Almost went dewalt with a 4 tool set, but this works out cheaper with the “battery hack” and will probably be a better fit. So I guess I’m team red now.

I’d honestly be ok with Ryobi, but I wasn't finding any good deals that got me tools I actually want now…lot of filler or kits with stuff like a 5.5” circular saw instead of something more useful…and I appreciate the craftsmanship of a fine tool.

What type of yard? I have a pretty small yard, so some of the upgrades (e.g., interchangeable blades on the XP, the speed IQ) don't mean that much to me. I do have a little slope, so I find the self-propelling to be useful. Really just depends on your personal needs.

Since when do we buy stuff here based on needs?

He should buy the rolls Royce under the lawnmowers, only suitable for the greens of Augusta, and then obsess about the ‘ring time’ of it, only have it serviced by elderly Japanese who have a life long experience with them.

And then now that patch of lawn in the back with it.

Although suitably named, I think what he needs more is a Toro Greensmaster Etriflex. At the cost of a small car he will be able to set the height of his grass to impossible to maintain (alone) levels, and make sure he can mow all parts of his yard evenly.

Any thoughts on how to add blackout curtains here? Preferably smart/motorized.

The existing sheer shades are nice top+bottom opening so I don’t really want to replace them…but this window is also south facing and I’ve grown accustomed to sleeping in the dark.
IMG_3498.jpeg

Door on the right opens, left side is just a big door sized window.

Should I just do one big set of double curtains that cover the whole wall? Separate curtains for each?
Try for some sort of roller blind instead?

And if I go wall to wall curtains, should they also be floor to ceiling or a rod/track above the top of the windows.

Leave as is and buy an eye mask.
