I am so fucking pumped! This is gonna be so much better than Lord of the Rings. Minor pet peeves: many of the dwarves do not look like dwarves, and they pronounce Thorin's name as Thor (like the Norse god/Marvel superhero)-een, not Tour-een, like they do in the BBC audiobook version I grew up listening to. Fucking pricks!

Was already having a hard time getting myself that excited for this. The fact that it's now split into three movies didn't help.

Splitting it up might make it better, who knows, they have a lot of material they can use that's incidental to main story but integral to LOTR.

Though I was disappointed to read that they can't use anything from Unfinished Tales because they don't have the rights. WTF? Get the rights!!!!! This is already costing like $500 mil, right? So how much more could it be??

They turned the LOTR trilogy into three movies. Hobbit has around 100 pages less in it then the shortest book from that trilogy. I really don't understand how this is going to work as three films. It feels like a money grab to me, but maybe I am missing something.

They are going to add things alluded to in the Hobbit and in the appendices to LOTR, for instance the White Council, the "Necromancer" in Dol Gildur, stuff like that, that sets the stage for LOTR.

There are things mentioned in the Hobbit as asides that Tolkein later went back and explained as major plot points leading to LOTR but he never dramatized. Jackson will dramatize those.

Beyond that I have no doubt that he will indulge in some ridiculously long action sequences. Eg., the stone giants are mentioned almost in passing with the party approaches the Misty Mountains but from the trailer it looks like Jackson has made that into a major action sequence.

It could get a bit self indulgent, like his King Kong remake, which was ridiculously long with these dinosaur chases and such.

I wish they were showing this in 48fps WITHOUT 3D. As it is, I may stick to base 24fps/2D because every time I see anything in 3D I get a headache. (and in avatar, the 'hallmark' of 3D movies, the content gave me a second, bigger headache)

Interesting that the didn't show Smaug in that trailer.

I don't think Smaug will show up until the 3rd movie, or at the very earliest, the end of movie #2.

I hate most 3D movies too, but apparently the move to 48fps helps the experience a lot. It's not nearly as likely to make one get a headache or feel sick.

They look silly in the trailer, but I imagine in realtime they'll look much better. Remember, trolls, orcs, etc. were already 'perfected' in LotR. Minor adjustments for new technology are all that is needed.

Why would they? He's the big reveal.

So, when LOTR came out we were all excited and my wife and I went with my mom & dad. We (wife & me) loved it but at the end of three hours, my mother was outraged. She had no idea it was being broken up into three movies. When the screen flashed "Directed by Peter Jackson" she was like WTF????? really pissed off. At us and at him. I told her, three books, three movies, I just assumed you knew.
