There is textual support for some of this though I don't remember the details, but in a bunch of Tolkein apocrypha such as Unfinished Tales he recounts stories of what was going on contemporaneously with The Hobbit. One story I recall was about Gandalf being locked up in Dol Gildur, Sauron's (aka Necromancer) tower in southern Mirkwood. Maybe Jackson will use that. The point is, he doesn't have to make stuff up to expadnthe story beyond the book and hopefully he will keep that to a minimum.

I'm very excited to see what Jackson decides to add in terms of Gandalf's interaction with Sauron, particularly what form Sauron will take. I also speculate that Smaug needs an adequate prefacing since he is not just a monster but an intelligent and charming being. That history that will hopefully be provided will take us to Beleriand and maybe show us a past interaction of Smaug with Sauron. That would be awesome.

Is that in addition to the two parts of the Hobbit?

As long as they don't start making shit up to get enough material for a third movie I have to say that I don't really see a problem with it.

And when it comes out as a Blu-Ray three-movie set, I may just watch the whole thing in a single marathon sitting.

Damn straight. Smoke a few bowls of Longbottom Leaf, cook me up a brace o' coneys with taters and I'd be ready to go!!! :slayer:

What I really, REALLY look forward to and wish they'd devote their time and resources towards is a remake of at least some parts of The Silmarillion.

To do that they would need a TV mini-series almost; The Silmarillion is too uneventful and too disjoint for it to make a good movie.

Yeah a miniseries with a few seasons. That would be a tough one.

I think you could scrunch the main events of S into a 2 hour movie. Am I crazy?

Absolutely. You would be cutting out a lot of things to see that going into light. I mean, LotR, which was maybe half as detailed as S is, was still 2.5 hours a movie and skipped countless happenings (important and unimportant alike). S has too much going on, unless you start ignoring the history of everything and stick to a specific story/events around that story, such as Melkor's rise, betrayal, and fall.
