Good quote from the PETA nutcases:

Octopuses are intelligent animals who feel pain, have proven problem-solving abilities and value their lives as much as we do ours.

Something about this line seems so cute:

"He had a whole hermit crab yesterday."

In it, she urged aquarium bosses to spare Henry from a "life in captivity" and said supporters had contacted them calling for his return to the sea.

I wonder how she determined whether Henry was aware of his status as "in captivity" and that he preferred the nefarious depths.

God damn you! I was going to mention the same thing.

I always thought it would be fun to have one as a pet - they're supposedly pretty smart (about as much as a dog) and aquariums often report that they've found them to take trips out of their tanks to go hunt in others when bored.

We got my little brother a hermit crab when he was in elementary school. It got so big, and we never gave it a new, larger shell to accommodate it's size, so I think it killed itself.

Cephalopods are eerily intelligent.

An octopus can figure out how to open a jar to get a crab without difficulty. In the wild they raid lobster traps. Wikipedia reports they are also known to climb aboard fishing boats and hide in the containers that hold dead or dying crabs for an easy meal.

Some squid hunt in packs and cooperate to hold schools of fish.

Cuttlefish communicate with each other by changing the pattern and color of their skin.

Creepy stuff.

I used to have 2 Hermit Crabs when I was little. Pretty tough guys in that when my sister was mad at me she put them outside and they survived for about 3-4 days.

I didn't even realize they had octopuses (octopi??) up near Wales and the UK area.

Ocotpuses and other marine things like rays are considered intelligent creatures--I believe I read that they often observe humans.

^ I think they're the fourth most intelligent species on Earth, right behind the mice, dolphins, and us.
