I never even heard about this show and then BAM one day the marketing for it blew up. Is it a popular show? I tried watching it once and it was clear I wasn't the target demo.

Is this the show that was on UPN/The CW about football players in a quasi-NFL league and their wives/girlfriends?

Yessir. A quick trip to Wikipedia shows it is a spinoff of that show Girlfriends from the WB. Makes sense when I try to remember what The Game was like when I watched it. Very much the same sort of dramedy that I never got.
