I'm completely new to fashion so pardon the very basic question:

As I understand it new collections come out twice a year, one for spring and summer one for autumn and winter. When do each generally hit stores and when do sales and discounts start?

The latest fashions hit the stores when the weather is completely inappropriate for trying them on. That is, winter clothing shows up in August so you are trying on 12 oz flannel and tweed when it's 95F outside. Then, when there's cold wind and snow on the ground, it's time to try on the latest Fiammesco and Italian linen. Logical, no?

Hence the better idea is to avoid Fashion and pursue Style. Fashion is about some designer ( who doesn't wear his own designs) at a show screaming "Me, me!" whereas Style is about having a good tailor who knows it's about you. Once you study the classic ensembles of the past and can mentally assemble what you like in your head you can begin the five year process of building up a very personal wardrobe. In the long run it will cost you less because the clothes won't go out of Fashion yearly and will be well made enough to last for years. And you will always look sharp.

Welcome! Word of caution: avoid using the "f" word around here, it results in more lectures than answers.

The classic model has two major seasons: S/S releases around March and A/W around September. However, the pace of modern retail has quickened considerably and many places (especially large brands) have four seasons now, just like the calendar year. There are also aberrations like "resort" seasons, when warm weather clothing is debuted in winter. This is usually done by high priced, flashy designers, for whose customers actually go to warm weather resorts in the dead of January.

Finally, if you follow blogs/tumblrs that use lots of lookbooks or runway shots, remember that those are a full year ahead of release. A great overcoat you see in a Michael Bastian show in the winter of '11-'12 won't hit stores until '12-'13.

Hope this helps!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
