Anybody else see "The Eagle" yet? The battle sequence early in the movie was utterly ridiculous. The rest of the movie wasn't too bad. They seemed to model the Picts, or whatever the "Seal People" were supposed to be, a little too much like American Indians...and I doubt that any people, no matter how tough and hardy would want to run around the far north of Scotland half-naked for very long.

I can remember some of my friends at Oxford telling me that the same novel (published in 1954) that was the basis for the new movie was also the basis for a radio serial in Britain in the 1950s. It had a distinctive theme song.

Interesting, more recent scholarship seems to call in question that Legio IX Hispana (which definitely did disappear) was wiped out in Britain. It seems more likely that they may have been massacred by the Jews.

I'm a sucker for "historical" hack and slash movies in general and Rome in particular so I'll be checking it out. The fact that no one can seem to get the combat right is a constant source of annoyance but what can you do.

What would be the context of the Jews killing a Roman legion?

I meant is there a context that Jews would have killed it outside of the ME or is it assumed that in the "killed by the jews scenario" the Legion went east before it was killed.

I was aware that the Romans and Jews had been in conflict, you know, the whole JC thing.

If IX Hispana was wiped out by Jews, it would have been after they had been sent to the East. As Globe points out, there were two major Jewish uprisings during that period that involved an enormous loss of life on both sides. The Romans had to commit 12 legions to suppressing them. There is also a possibility that the legion was wiped out by the Parthians.

I read the book the movie was based off of. I enjoyed the book. When saw the movie at first I was like "WTF"!?! Then I just watched the movie and enjoyed it for what it was, a popcorn muncher.
"Centurion" was an awesome movie. It should the 9th being lead to their demise. While "the eagle" was based on the disappearance or annihilation of the 9th.
For a PG-13 movie it was good.

The movie to watch in this genre is " Black Plague" it comes out in a few weeks.
