More recently, I've been playing the accelerated London system for precisely that reason. The plans for the knights playing behind the bishops, and particular the London dark squared bishop, are fairly clear. I like the Scotch, but man, you are (or at least I am) sweating bullets with that under-protected king with the underdeveloped queenside. I'm always happy to get that knight and bishop off their starting blocks, sometimes even if it results in losing a tempo, but it is often later in the game than I'm fully comfortable with. There are not that many mistakes to give. It leads to a very sharp, tactical game, and though against live players I am still quite winning with it (2-1 ish, with some notable "d'oh" losses, as I suspect is common at my (poggy) level), I wanted to expand my limited repertoire to have at least one positional, systems based opening.I've seen you play enough scotch games - as white - against bot to know that you are not averse to launching attacks before developing lol .
here i'm playing as black and taking in the game as it's presented . my light bishop is a pawn move behind development it's true . but the game is happening on the kingside . i'm taking the win b/c they are giving it to me .
