While I was up at Balliol, there was one chap who sported a scarlet opera cape in conjunction with jeans and a black leather motorcycle jacket. He usually packed a big sheath knife as well. As I recall, his family were wealthy and prominent in the Tory party--a true British eccentric of the old school. He was very tall, powerfully built and looked tough, so I think anyone would have mocked him at some risk.

I think capes are sort of neat but probably a bit too retro-centric for wear in SoCal. I can only imagine my wife's reaction if I started wearing one!

It's sad, really, that such things have fallen out of fashion. Like hats, which I do not understand the evolution away from the use of these items.

The cape is like the Monocle--rather practical items of fashion that have fallen by the wayside because of popular caricature.

Are capes warm enough to be wearable at Scandinavian winter? Perhaps the kinds that "have fancy toggles and buttons that close the thing." Do you have any photos that I could show to my tailor? Are there any rules I need to know?

I'm not sure how warm they keep. If you are from Europe, you might try some of those middleages/fantasy-roleplaying communities. They might help you out on their clothes and ways to purchase them.

Has styleforum liberated the village from the Goblin problem? See, I'd trust G'maar Nidetph the enchanter and his jolly band of adventurers before you guys.

I really like capes and have wanted one since I studied in a fairly conservative region of Spain where mainy of the old men still wore them as winter dress.

I've read that utilitarian capes are still popular in the European centerland with tweedy country-hunters (Switzerland, Czech Republic, Bavaria, perhaps north Italy, etc). Sort of like throwing a blanket on over your shoulders when you're sitting there waiting. Also easy to shrug off when the time comes, and the dog can sleep on it at night in the lodge.
