I don't have a picture, but one of the most stylish things I have ever seen was in paris, when I was in my 20's, I saw a man with gray hair, probably in his late 50's, wearing a pair of gray pants and a dark blue double breasted blazer, underneath the blazer, almost completely covered up, showing maybe 1/2 of an inch of fabric when the blazer was closed, was a maroon waistcoat. that was a fantastic look.

This is horrendous. Looks like you lost the bottom half of a suit, threw on your jeans, and stole shoes off of a hobo. And loser points for wearing a vest under the age of 50. OMG I just noticed the hat. OK, went from horrendous to clown.

An important question for all SF posters: Are you open to the idea that you dress poorly/can improve how you dress? If you think that you are well dressed and will continue thinking so no matter what anyone tells you, then commentary is useless.

That being said, after seeing two outfits from 38R and several from Barrell, I'm of the opinion that you gentlemen do not dress well. I wouldn't mind going into detail, but I'd like to know that you're are willing to listen. I'd rather not waste my time. I am not mad nor am I a female. If I were both of those things, it would not change my feelings however.

There isn't an accepted definition of what looks good; I accept that.

There is, however, a fairly accepted definition of CM. This doesn't enter into it. CM is about expressing your style within certain traditional--and admittedly inorganic--boundaries. Subtle coloring outside the lines demonstrates skill and finesse. SW&D is about artfully working outside rules or at least pushing them to their breaking point.

This thread clearly belongs in SW&D; there are quite a few people there who will probably work the vest-sans-jacket to great effect.

On a related note, here is a picture of me sitting on a toilet:

Edit: Both ACS and Tira walk the boundaries of CM. ACS crosses the boundaries more, but he does it with a sense of fun, takes his lumps when they come, and isn't defensive. In short, he has the personality for it to work (as well the taste, generally--sorry ACS, but I can't get behind that one four sided tie or those jeans [IMG])

All snark and schadenfreude aside, both of these are very well thought out, reasonable posts. Well said. I hope folks pay attention to them.

Jeans + sportcoat = Imminent failure

Jeans + orphaned jacket = Assured failure

Jeans + orphaned jacket + vest = Even Justin Timberlake is out

Jeans + orphaned jacket + vest + tie = Animals flee from you, sensing you're misguided and dangerous

Jeans + orphaned jacket + vest + tie + hat = Neighbors on the nightly news saying, "He was just such a nice guy, never thought he'd be capable of something like this."

I actually think so too, and I think it could go in two different directions. It could either go CM, wherein people post suits or odd jacket/trou fits with vests, or the SW&D route...which would need to be executed skillfully by the people over there.
