I am seeing more and more people wearing black suits. This includes plain black, pin stripes and chalk stripes. Who is doing it? Media figures, politicians (house members and senators), Governors of various states, and a few Obama cabinet secretaries.

Is the black suit becoming more acceptable or is it just for a select few?

IMO, nothing until I joined SF and started to read various threads. For some reason it is a big no-no!! It would seem that black is too formal?

During the campaign season I went to several fundraisers. Presidents of local banks were there and they all had black suits on. Frank Wobst from Huntington was wearing a beautiful black Brioni pinstripe.

Black's fine as long as it has a pinstripe, etc.

Is there a rule against black suits? Who made this rule? Is it written down somewhere?

These are issues I hope people will explore as this thread develops.

generally you wear a black suit to a wedding or a funeral. thats pretty much it. sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between charcole and black or midnight blue and black you might have had them confused.

There is nothing wrong with a black suit. It's simply a matter of opinion. People in the U.S., in particular, tend to have an aversion to black suits for some unknown reason. Because of this aversion, I would avoid wearing a black suit to a job interview, otherwise, I say if you can pull it off, wear it. People in Europe and Asia wear black suits all the time.

Good observation. I spent over 5 years in China. A black suit is a must. It is true in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. Taiwan as well.

The black suit is so monotonous. I am in an undergrad business school where you must wear business formal for presentations, and it is an ocean of black suits. One time a professor commented "wheres the funeral?" I just think they are boring.

Is Navy or gray really less "boring"?
