howdy, folks!

i would like to invest in a nice velvet blazer and don't know what color to go with.

i've had cheap or 2nd hand velvet blazers in the past but, now that i am older and wiser, i want to get a new one that will suit my lifestyle (wanna be rock star

).

i would most likely be wearing it out at night but would like to either dress it up or dress it down.

what color is best and what color goes better with everything? from dark jeans to grey and black trousers?

i am thinking black, but i have seen navy and burgundyish (sorry, colorblind. hence the question in the first place!)

also, if anyone has any recommendations for brands or labels that will not break the bank!

thanks!

Ive seen some every fall at Banana Republic that are really nice for the dollar value. You really cant expect a cotton velvet to survive more than a few outings as a wanna be rock star anyhow.

these started to come back a few years ago but you may have sort of missed the boat. I remember a nice one from Tom Ford, I think Etro usually has one, and then yeah you can check places like Banana Republic. As for colors, I've always liked dark purple or burgundy, but something like navy should be pretty flexible too. ben sherman

I've seen some handsome versions in a deep green. To my way of thinking, velvet jackets are best for the cooler months. Curious to hear what others' thoughts are.

Blue is always good for a classic velvet look but for a versatile one I would consider brown. It looks great with jeans and a white or blue shirt. It is just a tad more casual and you could wear it during the day or evening. The darker navy, burgundy, or green velvet don't seem right to wear during the day.

thanks for all the suggestions!

yes, i would wear it during the cooler months mostly in the evening. i might wear it for a broader time frame during the year than you most are suggesting but that's just me.

i like the midnight blue idea but i am not sure if it would go well with black. please confirm since i am color blind!

i also really like the brown idea since i know it goes with blues and black but would also like the velvet blazer to be really dressed up sort of replacing a dinner jacket type of thing. again, more of a rock look.

don't worry, i would wear a real dinner jacket or tux if appropriate!

thanks!

PS- what would the equivalent jacket for warmer months?

I have two, that as mentioned I wear during cooler months, mostly for festive events.

Mine are a dark blue from Express and a black from Banana Republic. Both are modern looking.

I wouldn't spend a ton of money on something that's not very versatile, and likely to have drinks spilled on it.

I have a blue that I really like. Looks great with jeans and a white shirt.
