OK this is one of those 'thank you SF' stories, but feel free to add anything at all on these models, when/how to wear'em or really any office shoe suit stuff at all lol

Ahem
I lurked for a month or two after realizing these ancient J&Ms (purchased in my mid 20s aka 6/7 years ago simply because I heard somewhere J&M made the President of the US's shoe)...

...were, um, "not working" anymore on just about any level of critical inquiry you could make (hahaha). 90s square toe, cemented and beat to sh*t. *aside: I will say when polished the leather wasn't the worsssst in the world, but still...for instance

So - largely thanks to SF data gathering - I went out this summer and got these. Probably not slow enough (AMEX bill..) but all on sale.

So working from 9pm clockwise we have a Ferragamo originale, Santoni GY, Magnanni, Carmina shell, and a DiBianco fullbrogue.

Basically the top row is more summer wear (blake/bologna..lighter colors or sleeker designs) and the bottom row is more bad weather fall/spring and winter since we have the sturdier stuff (Norwegian welt, shell double sole GY).

Furrrrther the left is more sport coat trouser R F while the right is more suit (tie with wholecut for sure) M T W.

This is hardly a strict "system" but I find the colors/weights/styles of the shoes lend themselves to at least a bit of a system so you're wearing them with outfits best suited to them. ...in a couple weeks I'll probably just shoot at random though in the morning.

Anyway I hope you guys get a kick out of what I was wearing for years and beers before vs. now, mostly thanks to SF!

Cheers!

Nice upgrade.

Consider tacks on the soles to prevent noticeable wear.

Thanks dude. The coming of winter is my main thing now. The 'what do in winter' issue when you or the super covers every entrance you use M-F with salt at random has just about 100k threads it seems. I'm not into the covers (not doable on most sales calls lol) nor the changing at my desk thing sooo I'll probably get a dainite and a storm welt/lug boot this Fall for the worst of winter, and use the bottom two in the pic strategically if it's not half-bad out.

The covers are great. I visit clients 5 days a week. They don't care. I have a pair of Totes covers at the office and at home. Never at a loss.

Yeah..I may reassess on the covers in the future.

I don't like suede nor derbies nor monk straps at all right now but who knows down the road (...a killer summer R and def F loaf is conspicuously absent from my little fleet right now :p)

Basically, regardless of the positive, neutral or negative first impression you may imagine covers convey to whomever, I prefer the 'I don't give a f*ck' look of just wearing the shoe 7am through 7pm.

And, on a less self-involved level, the ease of this approach of course too.

It seems you better go Dainite to roll like this though.

That's silly to me. Why not protect your shoes?

As I said..I may end up doing so. However there seems to be a variety of remedies for winter-with-nice-shoes. Some guys claim the JR Rendenbach and other high end leather soles can stand far more wet concrete and even salt (!) than many think. Combined with a sole moisturizing and protectant process at a really good shoe stand (or DIY) fairly often during winter's worst is one way to go.

You are about due for a bite from the suede bug.

Yeah..right now suede seems to me more a weekend casual shoe. ie dump the AF1s and start wearing more polos with a suede summer laceup, lol. Pretty preppy look tho, esp just to walk the dog or go a few blocks on an errand on a sat or sun aft

Suede dresses down well (and it's definitely more "country"/informal than calf as a rule), but the right style of suede shoe (with the right suit) can be suit-appropriate.

Witness the dressing-up potential of suede, courtesy of Fred Astaire and @NOBD (the latter of whom I'm not sure actually owns a single non-suede shoe):

On the other end of the spectrum, a pair of suede bucks looks great with shorts, which is about as un-dressy as it gets.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
