All my suits fit like shite. 38R fits my shoulders fine, but the chest is way too loose. I've been looking at getting a few suits that are fit just for me.

I just started my search (so forgive me if I seem clueless about a lot of the details), and spoke with somebody at Canadian retailer The Bay. The gent there told me that they offer suits made by Samuelsohn, or Coppley (haven't heard of the latter). The Coppley suits start around $700, and the Samuelsohn's average around $1200. I was told that not only do they just take measurements, but I can also specify lapel width, jacket length, pocket style, pant details, etc.

I know that Samuelsohn gets some props around here for quality in it's price range, but is it just me, or does $1200 seem quite low? or is this average? I was also told that they sometimes have promotions on the MTM suits, 20-30% off once a season. Anybody have any experience with MTM suits from The Bay?

I don't from the Bay but I have done MTM with Samuesohn. However the suits fit me well enough and are available in enough sizes and fabrics around here that I generally do OTR and quite often on sale.

The suits are great for their price range. I have them in my regular rotation with suits a couple of times as expensive or more and they completely hold their own in construction wearability and fabrics. I am continually amazed at how much I like them. And in fact sometimes wonder why I pay 3-5 times as much for other OTR suits.

What city are you in?

The Bay will often offer discounts on the Samuelsohn MTM if you ask.

I haven't bought any but I hear from friends who have that The Bay salesguys at Queen St. routinely give 30% discounts on MTM Coppley (and Sammy to a lesser extent) even if it's not during a sale. Hard to beat those prices.

btw, $1,200 is the price for Sammy. It's not low.

I'm in Ottawa.

Good to know that the prices are negotiable. I had always assumed that custom made suits would run in the $2000+ range...

$1200 canadian for samuelsohn MTM is about average, not a bad deal by any means, but not a great one either.

Of course, at a good day at the Bay you can get a RTW samuelsohn for $500 with discounts, so if you're close to a RTW size, it make economic sense to just get one altered (sorry, is that heresy here?)

In my experience, if too much alteration is required, the jacket will just never look or feel 100%

I agree; it does entirely depend on how close you are to the cut of the jacket.

If the Coppleys can indeed be got for $500 that seems very competitive for MTM with in-person service? (I assume Bandwagonesque converted to US$.)

Do you guys think the template can be customised with armholes, waist-suppression, and whatnot to the point where it doesn't look like, well, a Bay suit? If not yet, there may be hope: in the last year or two The Bay has started carrying Point Zero's fashionable and disposably-constructed suits, so they're at least aware of contemporary cuts.

I didn't convert prices to USD. With the exchange rate at 1.13 for the past while... it's essentially the same though. However, I still have not seen any fall in prices here to bring our clothes more in line (post conversion) with US prices, so we still pay quite a bit more (~15-25% + taxes) than you Americans.

Might want to check out ER Fisher on Richmond just west of Kirkwood, across from the Superstore. They also do Samuelsohn MTM, and I would imagine they'd put a bit more attention into measurements than a department store.

Their website isn't of much use, but here it is anyhow:

http://www.erfisher.com/

They used to have a store on Sparks but closed it a year or so ago.
