The previous post brings up a good point. Despite older associations with central asian gentry and dapper mongol hordes, the astrakhan today is most prominently displayed by Karzai, a sleazebag.

The other problem is that the cruelty of obtaining astrakhan is especially obvious when you wear one of these. I'm not saying go vegan, I'm saying that it's up there with some of the most disgusting things people do to get materials from animals.

Without getting too political, it is always hilarious to me when US-installed dictators - who worked in the West for decades and wore suits and ties - go "back home" and start wearing village-wear. GTFOH. Makes me sick.

I have a fur trapper hat -- sheared beaver. Looks stupid but it has changed how I experience winter... with a fur hat, you just don't get cold...

How practical are these? I love the look but I imagine when it's freezing cold in the city that it does nothing for your ears thereby nulling the warming benefits it provides to the top of the head. And if it requires that one wears ear muffs you might as well go for a rabbit fur trapper hat (what I rock in the winter). I flip the flaps down and tie it up on those crazy windy winter NYC days.

Since we're talking about winter headgear associated with cultural stereotypes has anyone worn a deerstalker? It has earflaps that come down for cold days.

The astrakhan or deerstalker, I wonder which one would be more embarrassing to wear.
