Tea drinking was introduced to Britain in 1662 with the marriage of the Portugese Princess, Catherine of Braganza, to Charles II.
Commercial cultivation of tea in India was begun by the East India Company in 1848 after tea plants were smuggled out of China.
A cup of tea has been referred to as a metaphor for the British Empire founded on trade:
the cup itself coming from China
the tea from India
sugar from the West Indies
the water and milk from Britain
with all the ingredients stirred together by Sheffield steel.
