Apple maps still has a long ways to go. It doesn't always give me the fastest / shortest routes and I end up using google maps far more often.

The interface is clunky, too. Google maps app has it nailed. It's simple, intuitive, and syncs with addresses you searched for online.

It's been a couple days since I switched to t mobile and I've already used 2.7 gigs from tv streaming.

The fucking annoying part about t mobile is that it works amazingly maybe 30-40% of the time and the rest is filled with spotty reception, poor coverage, and slow / jerky LTE speeds. I'm also on regular 4g way too often.

I wonder how long it'll take for them to iron out the kinks in their network.

I actually like the Apple Maps UI, but agree that Google Maps generally works better. Not that I haven't had get me lost on occasion too.

I don't know if it's the fact that my 5s switches between LTE and 4G quite often, but the battery life on this phone isn't nearly as good as the 5's.

Anyone else experiencing diminished battery life? An apple rep said that by restoring your phone from an old backup can contain "gremlin" settings that can kill your battery life. She suggested I set it up as a new phone.

I think I'll try that out after I return my 5s and get the same exact model directly from t mobile (need to in order to for them to pay off my att ETF).

Also, I LOVE the flip board app. It's fantastic on the iPad mini and iphone as well.

I've migrated to new iPhones before and have found that can sometimes help.

This sounds like BS to me.

Apple reps have also been known to recommend closing all your apps manually on occasion to improve performance, which is sad.

There isn't any reason to use default mail.app over mailbox with gmail. http://www.mailboxapp.com/

I tried that for a couple days and couldn't stand the interface. It was also buggy as hell and didn't properly index my emails.

I'm just so so so used to the stock mailbox app at this point that I can't use anything else.

The gmail app blows monster dick, too. It doesn't preload emails and thus forces me to refresh my inbox every time I get an email. Frustrating as hell.

Edit: apparently you can pay google 5 bucks a month to become a business user, upon which they'll turn on exchange support for you, but I don't know if any regular Joe Schmoe can subscribe because it asks you questions on your business and shit.

I'm at the point of ditching my oldddddd gmail account and using an iCloud email.

Stupid google blew it with this move. They tried to force people to use their shit. Too bad their shit sucks. Now I'm tentatively going to abandon the entire google ecosystem.

Mailbox is a great alternative. I love being able to quickly set reminders for email and having Dropbox built in. I don't find the current builds that buggy at all.

Another alternative is Boxer. I met some of the developers for it last year and decided to give it a shot. It's a lot more feature rich then Mailbox is and has a nice UI. Has their own take on Mailbox's reminder system and built in "quick replies." Unlike Mailbox which only supports Gmail, it works with a wide variety of email services. It also supports Box .net and Evernote on top of Dropbox. Main reason I have been hesitant to fully switch over to it is that the reminder system they use is not as quick as Mailbox's as it takes a couple more clicks to get everything set right. That and it used to be a little buggy. Luckily things have cleaned up in that area.

I just downloaded boxer and will try it out.

    Thanks for the rec.

Does anyone know if we can use the stock ios notification sounds for third party apps? I can't find how to change boxer's email notification sound.

    :fu:

I'm already not liking boxer. When I get new emails, it'll notify me, but the boxer icon won't show the number of unread messages blurb.

It also forces me to manually refresh the inbox to load the very emails it just notified me of.

The stock mail app preloads emails so it's just there for you to see as soon as you open the app; no manual refreshing required.

Ugh. I'm one step closer to ditching gmail altogether now. Fuck. I can't even count the number of online accounts I have that are tied to my gmail account.

Check notification center. You need to make sure "badge icon" is turned on, otherwise it won't show the number of unread emails. Mine works fine here.

In regards to manually refreshing the inbox, do you have "app refresh" turned on? Otherwise the system won't download items in the background.

Also, keep in mind that iOS learns your use habits over time and adapts apps to reflect this. Apps that you use frequently (and have "app refresh" on) will always been pulling data in the background. Apps that you don't, won't be given priority. This saves data usage and battery life.

Yup, all settings you mentioned are turned on.

I paid 6 bucks for this. I hope it works for me over time. I guess I'll have to use it for more time before I completely write it off.

Are you using it to sync to Gmail? That's really odd as it works fine for me. Maybe a bug?

Try emailing support too. If you can't get through PM me and I'll send you a direct contact.

:slayer: at the bolded -- baller! Really appreciate the gesture, too, by the way.

Anyway, yes, I am using gmail. I've decided to call it quits with Boxer. It's extremely buggy because I'll read an email and the unread ticker disappears... at least initially. Then a couple minutes later, the boxer app will show the unread email notification and it's the exact same email I had just read, showing as unread! Other times, it won't even notify me of new emails and when I manually force a sync, it'll show 6 new emails from hours ago at once.. as if it had completely missed them prior to my checking. WTF?

God I fucking miss using gmail exchange with the stock mail app. That shit just worked. None of this third party crap works. I don't care for archiving, or having to-dos, any of that. I just want a simple email interface that pre-loads emails. I can't believe any of the highly-acclaimed apps I've tried don't do that.

Yup. Google has been fucking up, HARD, lately. They're trying to force their entire ecosystem on everyone now and as this article below shows, that does not engender goodwill at all within the customer's mindset. What's with all this bullshit with Google +?

Why not create an excellent product and let the quality speak for itself? Don't fucking force feed us your shit, Google. Fuck you, seriously.

    +1

Between google+, google's current email bullshit, the "new" google maps, forcing google+ on youtube, etc.
