I thought I remembered discussion of different weight canvases but wasn't sure. Good to know!

Matthew is in France on holiday, so I'm trying to not pester him too much. I plan to dig into the details next week and let everyone know. I've opted to go for full-canvas, as it's only 150GBP extra. I also know that there isn't an unlined/unstructured option at the moment. The "lightest" configuration is half-lined. I'll inquire about the canvas, as well as the shoulders. Thanks for the insight, gents!

Slightly off topic, but related: do you guys send your Steed stuff to local dry cleaners when necessary, or do you send to some specialist shop like Rave in Arizona? And if you happen to know a good cleaners in the Dallas area (Mark in Plano?), that would be great, too. I typically take the “dry clean rarely if ever” approach, but that might get gross at some point. If it hasn’t already. Thank you.

I’m a bad one to ask. I use J’s Cleaners in Dallas and just take everything there. That said, I also rarely dry clean my tailored clothing. With my linen suits I take them in for a good pressing every so often and do touch up pressing at home.

I have done both. To be honest I think as long as you find a place that does the work on premises you will be ok, but yes, dry cleaning should only be done when it really needs it. I have suits that I haven't dry cleaned in years. Yeah, yeah, I know.

Rave is good, if not quite so good as Jeeves of Belgravia.

French Dry Cleaners in Boston also generally does no harm. Cold-water wash on shirts, hand press. Less-egregious than most on suits. Somewhere in town there might be a haberdasher who gives a damn and will make a recommendation. That's how I found these guys.

Thank you all for the responses.

I live close to J’s. I may give them a whirl when I get ready to bite the bullet. Shipping a suit to one of the specialty places is probably easy enough; it just seems like a chore. Chris Despos recommended a cleaners over on Southwestern and Greenville (I think that’s where they were), but I believe they are long gone. Too bad.

It was Cox Drycleaners in that location. They were the best. Haven't seen anyone come close to their quality of work. Haven't dry-cleaned any of my personal clothes since they closed. Could give you a long list of cleaners to avoid in Dallas but don't have any to recommend.

Hello and I hope everyone is well. I dry clean my bespoke suits, sport coats, pants, etc. as little as possible. That said, when necessary, I have used Rave for years now and have been very satisfied. I send out my bespoke shirts there as well for their shirt service and have been equally satisfied. It’s a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion. Just my thoughts!

How often should tailored clothes be dry cleaned?

I met a Savile Row tailor who was pleased to tell me that his four-year-old suit had "of course" never been cleaned. It had a shiny line where the cutting table pressed against the trousers but otherwise looked OK.

For me, I am most likely to clean summer suits-- once or twice a season before they go back. They are a little more fragile and will get abused more by moisture (from without and within).

The winter stuff I try not to so much, unless I am worried about moths. Sometimes I get burned by that and I have a midweight suit at Jeeves now, waiting until I send it to the invisible menders. Two tiny holes in the lapels. But if it is sturdy enough to survive several rounds of wear without needing pressing, I try not to overdo it. Tweeds especially, and luxury stuff like the Lesser Golden Bale-- there is some real magic about their oils that I don't want to strip away.

As my collection has increased I have taken to getting work suits stored at Jeeves in London. It makes sense to get them cleaned before being stored. So winter suits get cleaned and stored in summer and vice versa for summer suits. I have a few suits which bridge the seasonal gap and they are cleaned and stored less often.
