So, donate to science or just wear till they die?

Although the shell cannot be fixed, it can be reinforced to help keep it together. A very good cobbler like Steve at Bedo's should be able to do something to prevent it from getting worse. It would be expensive though. I think he'd have to remove the upper completely and then reline it. I can also see potentially using the tongue to help reinforce the structure, by creating a semi-bellows tongue on that side.

If you want to keep them for a longer amount of time than a natural death, I would suggest sending pics to Steve and asking for his advice now.

The tear is in an area that’s not usually exposed so you can attempt to repair it without much cosmetic issues. Also if it’s not in a weight-bearing or flex point the crack doesn’t usually get worse (consult a cobbler on this one). For mine the crack is right where the quarters meet the vamp so had to get it repaired. The cobbler put a leather patch across the tear and sew the patch down all the way around. It doesn’t look the greatest but it’s not bad all things considered.

I think I would cry watching these get cut in half 😭 What size are they? I might be interested in purchasing and just getting them repaired if possible.

While I agree that would suck, he does cut some beautiful boots in half. I do realize that these are unicorns and that is what holds me back from that untimely demise.

I may look to get them repaired. I would just hate to dump more money into them as I rarely ever wear them and I just paid $200 or so to have Alden refinish them. Maybe I'll hit up Alden restoration and see what they recommend.

They are 11.5 if anyone is interested.

So I reached out to Steve and Alden. I have still to hear back from Steve but Alden replied almost immediately and told me to send them in. Waiting to see what Steve will say.

Alden will almost certainly toss them in the trash. I would not send them in.

Have they tossed your shoes before? I have had them send back some pretty beat up shoes. Worst case they would say they are unreparable.

Still interested, albeit at an extreme discounted price.

not mine personally, but i know several people here as well as on reddit whose shoes Alden would not return due to an irreparable defect (not the same as Alden Restoration sending them back to you and saying "sorry, we can't restore these").

Well does Alden then send one a check for fair market value of the shoe/boots?

yeah i think they have offered a refund or a replacement (although for rare shell a replacement isn't possible)

I have read the same thing. They don't even like replacing a welt from what I understand. A tear in shell cordovan is not something they will do, because they only return shoes to factory specs. An independent cobbler will do the work needed (if possible) to keep the shoes on the street.
