Wizard of Oz?

I know this is an appreciation thread but I recently perused an Allen edmonds boutique at the south coast plaza, the leathers for the most part feel flimsy and plasticy. Is it just me or has the quality gone down a lot? I remember buying and selling AEs almost 20 years ago and the leather were nice and beefy (for their price range) although never designed very sleek.

Some of them are, yes. I've had a few shoes that were made by AE 20-30 years ago, and usually the uppers are thicker on those pairs. With newer pairs, it's very random. You might get a beefy one, or a very thin one.

Going with the Dalton today.

I am going to a wedding and believe it or not. I was asked to wear a blue suit. Don’t own that color, so I decided on buying a cheap suit since most likely won’t wear it again.

This thing sure feels cheap.

I received an email from Jean at Shoebank last week about the F2 sale. It turns out that she does have something I've wanted for a long time, and the price was about as good as it gets. I'll post it when it arrives. For today, green Neumoks. No one else is in the office except for me, as the wildfires changed our schedule for this week. The air quality in our area is back to normal today and very clear.

I got that email too. So far I’ve resisted the urge to call and ask about what they have in my size.

I made the call too, but nothing new was there. I’ve cleared out the Shoebank a couple of times now.

I'm afraid to call. Last time I got my natty shell freeports for a deal. They had a pair of shell Higgins as well. The only thing that stopped me from pulling the trigger on those is that they're on dainite. I've sworn off dainite after too many near-death experiences.

Are you size 8 D? There was a pair of natural Freeports in that size with a leather sole. I turned them down because... the tongue. They are gone now, so hope you got them.

That was me. Nabbed those back in early December. They had a pair of Burgundy shell Higgins on dainite as well. If the price comes down a bit more I might and just resole.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
