[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] One of the best paraphrasings of Williams I've read was something in a magazine descrbing him: "as fucked up as the characters he created."

I've seen many hundreds of photos of him, and I'm afraid he wasn't generally this well turned out. Oh, he wasn't a slob...he just wasn't a Gore Vidal or William Saroyan.

And yes, he was just that fucked up, if not more. My master's thesis (which I may expand into a book) plus an article I have coming out soon were on just this. If anyone's really interested in how screwed up he was, read Tom: the Real Tenessee WIlliams by Lyle Leverich, or Cry of the Heart by Dotson Rader. Fascinating stuff. Considering how insane the rest of his family was, he actually was (in the immortal words of Frasier Crane describing Cliff Claven in light of Cliff's mother) "heroically well-adjusted."

It must be that cigarette holder that gives him a soigne air. [IMG] The failed lobotomy of his sister, the early death of a gay lover, his gay-bashing, a history of family, and all added to his general persona. I also like James Joyce's style: [IMG] [IMG]

Cry of the Heart by Dotson Rader.

Speaking of fucked up, have you met this guy? He's from another planet.

No, I haven't. I'd love to, though, as I've heard nothing to contradict your sentiment!

He and my mother were friends and we spent a few otherworldly nights around the dinner table together. Yikes...[IMG]

Any James Joyce style photo should include the eyepatch.

What I like most about Joyce were the various rings he wore and the fact that he had a certain jaunty frail elegance. James Joyce was a customer of Berluti's bespoke too.
