If I could start over and have only 10 pairs of shoes:

1. Black plain toe oxfords (for use with black tie - I despise patent leather)
2. Black punch cap oxfords (prefer them to stitch cap)
3. Black austerity brogues
4. Black single monks
5. Medium brown punch cap oxfords
6. Dark brown double monks
7. Chestnut single monks
8. Tan to medium brown derbys
9. Medium brown loafers
10. Medium brown scotch grain derbys (think some of the Vass models)

I currently have 1-3 and 5-8, together with an excess supply of black shoes. When my black Ferragamo bit loafers go, I will probably replace them with a nice black single monk.

The way I tend to think of it, is that I need a set of (lace-up) shoes for cooler weather and a set of warmer (loafers). In each set I need: one pair of sleek, minimalist black formal shoes (oxford toe-caps, for instance), two pairs of non-textured, polished leather dark brown shoes that go with suits and tailoring, two pairs of more casual brown shoes that go with chinos and other casual clothes. that's ten shoes. I guess specialty shows such as walking boots or espadrilles for the beach are situation-specific. Living in London, I have a slightly expanded 'winter' set with a couple of 'semi-dress' shoes that have rubber soles for very wet days.

Having said all that, for me personally, it would just be sad not to have one pair of spectators. They are my "freedom" shoes.
