Team member resigned after 6 years

he was with the company 8 years, 6 of those as part of my team. i've worked with him the longest out of everyone in my current team. man, it hurts like a motherfucker esp. since i really liked him as a person. a most unmanagerial and unmanly thing to do but i almost thought like i was gonna cry (well, not really but it's one of those instances where crying probably would have helped, you know what i'm saying?).

anyway, i imagine others can relate. thoughts?

(now i get to send e-mails out to the rest of management and my team letting them know about this)

as consolation - it's the nature of life to change, nothing is permanent.

i wish i knew what the situation was. this was completely out of the blue. this morning i was doing year end performance reviews and i have one category for loyalty (it's only 3% of the overall weighting). i gave him a 10 out of 10 on that category.

i can speculate. salary (according to him his current salary was competitive with what he'll be making at the new job)? a particularly difficult project that he was on (yeah, this one has morale down for everyone on the team)? having to travel a lot in the past 2 months and his wife not liking it because he's got two kids (related to said project)? wanting to explore different technologies (his reasoning when i talked to him)?

so yeah, i wish i knew what it was.

A good buddy of mine that I used to work with, went to his boss and resigned one day. He is such a nice guy and so well liked, his manager actually cried when he gave her the news.

yeah, i feel for you man. I don't have direct experience but sorry to hear about it anyway. hope you get it all sorted out and in the end he's got to be happy so that's what's the most important thing.

Finding really good employees is difficult, and when the really good ones leave, it hits home. I just had a really good teacher move on because her husband got a good opportunity with a law firm in another town. Finding her replacement has proved...challenging.

When I told my boss at the company I used to work at while I went to school that I was resigning her eyes got super big and she almost looked like she was going to cry. Over the course of my last 2 weeks I showed her what my job entailed... she couldn't believe all the stuff I had to do on a daily basis. Best song for the moment:
