I've been searching around online for a while now looking for some sort of info on this to no avail. Figured I'd give old SF a shot at it.
My wife inherited some mineral rights for a plot of land in TX. We
live in WI. The land was leased last year and my wife received a
little over $9k in "signing bonuses"
I'm wondering if I should be expecting a 1099 from the company that
leased the mineral rights and paid the bonus, or if it would be
treated as an advance on a royalty and documented in schedule E of our
1040.
Any ideas/info would be greatly appreciated.
