Not only that but FIRE practitioners are also running @ room temp IQ. It is much more enjoyable to simply do something you love and make more money than it is to live like Smeagol.

No one wants to pay me a reasonable salary to just drink.

Not everyone, in fact probably most people, were given the life opportunities to do something they truly enjoy that they can also make a good living at. I think I've mentioned here before how the person I'd most call my mentor was one such person and was a practicing named founding partner at his law firm and went into the office daily until six weeks before his death at 90. The guy was a complete ******* boss.

I've also said many times, and this will be in agreement with E-daddy, I don't get living like a pauper for 30 years so you can retire at 55 at...live like a pauper for 30 years.

Final addition would be pensions, annuities, Social Security, etc. provide cash flow in retirement that will mitigate the need for a huge cash cushion. Of course and sadly SS represents 90% or more of household income for an astonishing number of people.

This conversation reminds me of a talk I recently had with my mother (peak boomer?) lately. Ironically, she is both the hardest working person I know (its a pathology for her, this not 100% a compliment) and has not had to work a job to support herself since she was in her early 20's.

She was talking to me about my new job and wringing her hands if it was something I "love" doing. I told her that its an unreasonable expectation to have your passions support you and your family. A person is supremely lucky to be able to support their family working a job that is meaningful, rewarding, and enjoyable at times. Bonus points if its something that is reasonably secure and doesn't take a physical toll.

Between crypto and weed, the Millennial 401K isn’t looking too solid.

Millenials are just buying the dip here. They are long term investors.

I briskly filled out this retirement goal calculator online. The report said in order to reach my goal I need to do one of the following: 1. Increase my savings to 130% of my annual salary, 2. change my rate of return to 13% annually, or 3. Delay retirement until age 106.

I'm torn what to do.
