Sorry but can someone connect the dots between $400M in loans in relation to a $175B in deposits? The run on the bank was precipitated by a multi billion dollar loss on long-duration treasuries so while this issue might be interesting and separately problematic, I don't see how it relates to the run on SVB.
Because you don't actually need all $175B in deposits to stop a bank run?

Regardless- it's more about the trend (200% increase Q/Q), and the red flags that it could mean elsewhere (if they were that lax in this area, what about other stuff, etc). Separately, it turns out their CRO left in early '22, and they never replaced her, so yeah... there were a ton of red flags.

SVB had ~8,500 employees and like any large organization of course it had some "red flags." If viewed through that lens, every corporation in America is a risk to fail.

I haven't seen anything to indicate that this bank run was precipitated by anything other than SVB taking far too much duration risk with its treasury portfolio which when understood by certain community members caused them to advocate withdrawals.

SVB built up that portfolio during the tenure of the departed chief risk officer. I don't know why they made that mistake or failed to address it but it doesn't appear that they were alone in doing so and I don't see it being connected to any other minor events. The biggest factor was a significant rise in deposits over a very short period which led to them holding so many long-dated treasuries which then became underwater due to the rate hike cycle.

I'm not sure what the take away is - Wells Fargo had more red flags but there wasn't a run there. First Republic is by all accounts a well-run bank but facing similar issues. If not for the support of the SIBs, it would have failed last week. I can't imagine how many other banks would fail scrutiny if depositors were out looking for red flags. Forbes named SVB a top 20 bank the week it failed and equity research analysts, who should be all over this stuff, had high price targets for the bank and didn't think it was on the verge of failure. SVB's biggest risk was clearly that it was ill-equipped to deal with a run and that's what killed it.

??? Wells is 'too big to fail', so it's backstopped no matter what. Also, it has so much more $$$ stacked up that it doesn't matter. Plus, the type of deposits at wells are very different - much more spread out, less 'density' (in $/depositor).

Please don't pretend a 'Forbes top 20' means anything. Forbes also had SBF, Elizabeth Holmes, etc on their 'best of' rankings. Equity research (and credit angencies) have proven to be lagging indicators (remember when S&P had Lehmans as a 'A' grade until 6 days before their collapse)

Doing a 'all banks have red flags' is a weird hill to die on.

Are we saying that main factor of the collapse was probably the duration risk? Most likely. But it's also not necessarily a cause, but more a symptom of a lazy and poor risk culture that has also shown red flags in other areas.

I see your argument that the insider loans you are referring to when viewed in light of other "red flags" would indicate that SVB wasn't actually a well-run bank. I'm not disagreeing with any of that. I do think it's pretty easy in hindsight to point to things like that but none of these would have caused SVB to fail had they come to light earlier.

My point is that the proximate and but for cause of the failure was inability to stem a bank run. The bank run was caused by SVB holding long-term treasuries and some pretty critical mis-steps at the end (how they raised capital, timing of sale of portfolio, etc.).

The fact that there were unknown relatively minor red flags (like the $400M in loans you are pointing to) didn't cause or contribute to the failure any more than the notion that it was a "woke" bank did.

Wells being backstopped is intended to prevent a run on the bank but doesn't mean that Wells wouldn't have issues if 25% of the deposits walked out the door one afternoon. If the FDIC had announced that SVB was backstopped 1 week earlier, there wouldn't have been a run and SVB would still be around.

FRB is still struggling and I have yet to hear anyone come up with a valid concern about them other than the fact that they had a high percentage of uninsured deposits, do a lot of business in the Bay Area and that bank runs are contagious.

So...I get that "Manhattan is dead" and "the office is done" (pff), but looking at VNO....
If they had to turn in every single bit of mortgaged real estate to the bank, they would still have assets over market cap.
What am I not seeing on this thing? Seems massively panic-priced.
