Maybe I'm reading this overly simple but is the up side $500 from the employer? If so, seems like a lot of work for $500.

I think I’ve worked out a solution. She has a small account with TIAA-CREF because she’s on a university payroll for some part time work.

Looks like TIAA-CREF allows inbound IRA rollovers. So I think the answer is that in 2 years, can just avoid the pro rata rule by moving the simple ira into TIAA

Well, and being able to make pretax contributions up to $13k (so knock off marginal tax rate).

If this were structured as a 401k it would be a no brainier. But since it is an IRA it messes with future possibilities.

And what's IRA now? 6.5k? So you've got the delta plus $500. There's your upside so I'd work my decision from there.

6.5k but only the future long run benefits of the Roth since we are locked out of the traditional.

Optimizing that requires a lot of long run assumptions about whether tax rates will be higher or lower and how much we’ll will be drawing in retirement….

But 13k is double so I think that wins now that I have a way to get those funds transferred in the future. If someone was debating between Roth and traditional 401k but there was a rule that they could only contribute half as much into the Roth option, I think the advice would be to go with the bigger option (if you can afford it)
