It's worth every penny, especially if you're someone who watches a lot of YouTube videos. One way to save money on a subscription is creating a Google Family, with one person subscribed to Premium, and splitting the cost. If one person has Premium access, everyone in the "family" does, too.

an ad blocker is a must regardless, even this website is impossible to view without one. but i don't just get YT premium for removal of ads, that's simply what irks me the most about it. Background playback, picture in picture, offline viewing through downloads (yt-dlp is slowing dying), and having this available on all my devices/TV is nice.

YouTube is getting better at disabling videos if it detects ad blockers. It's only a matter of time before the site becomes completely unusable, even with add-ons. FreeTube is the future.

Don't use your TVs OS. Get an apple/roku/google/amazon/etc device. I stopped using LG's due to ridiculous user agreement terms around privacy and data collection even when turned off.

sadly it seems impossible to find a high quality dumb TV these days. Margins are razor thin for the manufacturers as it is

I've heard good things about the Nvidia Shield.

Love my shield pro, but honestly it is a little hard to recommend today.

They haven’t updated the hardware or lowered the price since 2019 (and I think the main chipset is still from 2015) and while it is still great today, I don’t know that it will still be great 5 years from now.

I’d probably buy the $99 Google TV Streamer 4k if I was shopping today and didn’t want to go into the AppleTV ecosystem.
