One situation where I would actually prefer stock options over naked shorting is in the case that I think a stock will fall over a long period of time. Why risk media driven pops causing margin calls when you can short the stock by buying puts. You know your cost going in and know what you stand to gain. I'll take that over the ability to lose an infinite amount and the ability to gain a very finite amount any day.

You better know something that the rest of us dont know, because it's not October of 2008 anymore and we're not looking at the Abyss anymore, so these large negative drops in the stock prices are going to be harder to come by. You need a japan or BP style situation to do it and while that happens more often than it doesn't I wouldn't bet on it.

None of this fits my investment strategy but I've assisted in similar trades that were very profitable in early 2008 through late 2008. One scenario was with the Mortgage insurers Radian (RDN) and PMI (PMI) bought puts on both at $10, closed the position at nearly $1 and bought the stock immediately at comparable prices. We knew the cost going into the puts and successfully estimated the risk of owning the stock.

Had we held a naked short position instead we would have lost BIG TIME in sep 2008 when the market rallied to all time highs and even the junk-stocks came back around even though later that year they were again back to roughly $1/sh.

Closed out CVX yesterday. Regretful, i love my oil stocks, but I think we're going to see much more normal pricing on them soon.

Not sure if this is the right place.

I had a friend recently point me in a direction of putting money into REITs in the Philippine market. I'm not looking to put too much in, maybe 10k, but any advice/thoughts on this?

ZIPCAR going public soon, in an "ecofriendly" city like Vancouver Canada (lol, Canada is top per Capita energy use per capita in world), opinions?

Had a group interview at a hiring mill right out of college, the interviewer was exactly like Ben Affleck from that flick, looks, attitude, everything.

I walked out and let the other 20 suckers and their families get bilked buying some BS mutual funds.

Anyway, I'm still long NOV, but getting shakey and thinking about bailing. Might move my money into the CORN ETF for a while.

My convergence play on sunpower finally paid off (sort of).

A long time ago, I bought some B shares after noticing that they were trading at a discount to the A shares despite having equal voting rights and being likely to get merged into a single share class eventually.

A tender offer should be opening this week for a 60% stake of both A and B shares at the same price (followed by a consolidation into a single share class). I plan to tender my shares since the stock if not for the offer, it was a pretty poorly performing stock for me...but it was nice to see the convergence bet finally play out.

I don't understand MSFT's purchase of Skype, 8.5 Billion down the drain.
