Searched, and got a few varying answers so I'm confused. What's the max a set of trousers can be taken in without having to do a total re-cut?

I am a 44R but wear 34 pants, would it be unreasonable to expect a tailor to be able to drop 5 inches from a set of trousers? Some threads here say 2" max, others say don't worry about going from 39-34.

thoughts?

I was going to say that but felt that it was too snarky. Plus, I've used that joke before.

So what would the limit be? What about 39-35 or 39-36?

How about: If you turn your trousers around you can pretend you're doraemon? :p
I think another problem is that even if you do manage to go from 39 down to 34, your pants will be as baggy as MC Hammer pants. Then you have to trim that down as well. Might as well buy suit separates if its offered.

Go no further than 5% of the waist size.

I've never been good at recognizing fine lines. I blame my colorblindness.

Tonight I am suffering the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

I notice you did not address my question.
