Taking a Sabbatical

Are you talking about a real sabbatical? Like the kind where you go to HR say "hey, I am going to go take a year to find myself, cya next august" and then you show up a year later like you just got back from vacation and get back to work?

Or are you talking about quitting your job and vanishing for a year. They tend to like a better reason than "gonna find myself" to grant somebody a sabbatical.

That's pretty much 100% it. In university we were pumped up about how dynamic and lucrative the career is, and three years into it I've realized it's neither.

I was thinking of taking an extended vacation from work - I work for a giant firm where I'm an interchangeable cog and I've heard that they will grant sabbaticals (at least that's what HR reps told us during recruiting.)

I'd be careful about this. You might damage your career taking so much time off at such a young age, in a recession no less. People will wonder if you're flakey, especially in your field. It's not like you've been working a long time and deserve a break in anyone's eyes.

Lots of CAs make transitions into other areas of business btw, but I think they tend to do that working for businesses that actually make/do stuff instead of huge accounting firms.

Maybe bumming around the world is necessary. Take a brake from work, and clear your mind. look into Meditation and tai chi.
