I've been searching for a good tailor in New York for quite some time now. I have used WW Chan in the past, but I'm not especially satisfied with the fit or the cut of Chan products.

Does anyone have any good firsthand experience with tailors in New York? I tend to favor conservative, two-button, single breasted suits in the English style.

I've been in the same quest, and have been doing a good deal of research on this topic. The best choice does seem to be a tailor named Raphael Raphaelli, who has a shop on Madison Ave. Do a search on Kai's experience with Raphael, I think he said it is the best suit he's ever worn, and MArc39 has written extensively about Raphael on Ask Andy. I met Raphael for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and everything checks out--I purposely did not make an appt so as to catch him in action, and sure enough he was in the workshop cutting 2 patterns for other customers, and in the other room his tailors were making the suits. This is a major rarity these days because 99% of tailors, even the well-regarded Darren Beaman in London, have the stuff actually made outside their shops by outside tailors. I do like the fact that Raphael has the added quality control of personally overseeing the garments made. Anyway, I'll have to save up for the $3,000 price of his suits, but good things are worth waiting for.
