I'll be in the Monterey area for a week or so on business starting this Wednesday. Any ideas on good tailors and/or good clothing shopping in the area? I'm actually leaving tomorrow morning, and really need to get a couple of items tailored (shirts and pants) while I'm in the area, obviously on fairly quick turnaround. Quality is very important also. Which tailor/s are good, and have good prices? Quality is most important. Thanks in advance.

Ask where Wilkes Bashford reccomends.

Hmm, yeah I did a search for reviews on that store. Thumbs down from what I hear. The staff is supposedly rude, and their selection is supposed to be subpar.

It's very odd but literally every time I look for a store I'm interested in in the Monterey Bay Area, the reviews seem to always to state that the staff are "rude." What's up with that?!?

Having lived there for 18 years I can see why they may be rude...

Wanted to bump this because I'm going there next month and wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations. I think the WB store in Carmel closed. (although now that I see this is in S&D for some reason..)

I'd ask the concierge at Spanish Bay and or Pebble Beach Resort.

This is an older thread, but is my exact question.

I live in Monterey right now and have stepped into upgrading my wardrobe into reasonably quality stuff on a budget. But it all needs tailored of course, and none of the people in my social circle (military) are much concerned about tailoring beyond sewing patches on uniforms and the like. I have spent lots of time and research trying to get this right, and I don't want a fail on the tailor front...

Recommendations are most appreciated. If you're curious about exactly what I want to have done, read on.

Thanks!
Rob

Alterations needed:

BB 1818 bought from Steve Smith on this board. Need the pants finished and jacket sides taken in. It also does not feel good around the armholes but I lack the experience to know what might need altered. Or even if it's possible to fix.

HSM Gold Trumpeter sport coat I just found at Goodwill for 10 bucks. The fit is pretty good, actually. Sides taken in should be it.

BB cotton pants (Might be Chinos or Khakis but are much heavier fabric than any Dockers I own. They are also dry clean only). They are 2 inches to big in the waist and are Elliot fit. They are MUCH baggier than I prefer, and I'd love to slim them down as much as possible. I worry a poor tailor would jack that up. Bought for $6 at Goodwill, btw. .

I havent lived there in a while, but don't remember much in the way of tailoring beyond local dry cleaners/alteration shops. Pants finishing should be within the reach of anyone there, but not so sure about jacket altering.

There's a great tailor in Carmel, just off Ocean.

Thanks! I suspected Carmel might be the place to look. I saw that Tuyen had good yelp reviews, but there were only 2 total so wasn't sure she was legit.

Cool! Enjoy your time out there before you head back to work. Assume you're at NPS.

Yep. I only have a little more time here, but I have certainly enjoyed it. Over the last 18 months, I've beat up my old cheap clothes and seems like I have an opportunity here to replace and upgrade. I've enjoyed lurking the forum.
