Hi Guy's i've been looking around the forum a bit and really enjoying the advice on here, it's certianly helped me when trying to work out whether a suit fits rather than just relying on the sales person.

I'm currently tossing up between having my current suits tailored or replacing them with new ones as i've lost 14kgs (30lbs for the yanks

). I was a 42-43 and am now a 40 (based on what i've tried on off the rack). I really have two questions, firstly is it worth having the jackets taken in (or even possible to go down that many sizes)?

and secondly i've been looking at the stafford ellinson 1096 suits, as they would be needed every day for work and are a 2 pant suit for $600each (hopefully i won't get flamed too badly for looking at these over the more expensive brands)and was wondering if anybody had any experience with them?

any help would be most appreciated, oh yeah and if it helps i'm an accountant and am currently in Perth Australia....

..

42 to 40 is one size.

Worth it? Depends on how much it'll cost. How much you like them. It's not likely your shoulders have narrowed.

There you go, just shows you how little i really know about suits, over here, it would appear a lot of places uses centimeters as the measurements. I just assumed given that the sizes over here appeared to jump by 4cm each that the 42-43 was more than one size (I was a 108 down to 100).

I'm not overly attached to these suits, as they are quite a boxy cut and weren't overly expensive anyway so was leaning towards new suits as i've found a slimmer cut seems to appeal to me at the moment.

If you're not overly attached then I'd get new suits

Pick your two favorites, get them tailored, and then buy the rest new.

Well, without knowing more about the exact suits your thinking of altering, I cannot give you any truly good specific advice.

Alterations are expensive when done right. Complex alterations performed by only a semi skilled tailor are not worth the time, money, or effort. Reducing the chest measurement is not a simple alteration. Skilled tailors are expensive, and complex alterations add expense as well.

So, your looking at maybe $100 per jacket. Plus whatever it is for the pants, which may or may not be a simple taking in of the waist. Okay, that said, $100 for a $1,000 suit, not a bad price. But was the suit truly worth $1k? Debatable. I wouldn't bother with anything that is fused. Probably wouldn't bother with anything that is half canvassed either (BB 1818 line, Joseph Abboud, HSM GT, etc.) Fully canvassed Oxxford? Absolutely.

I highly doubt your shoulders changed width, but it is also highly probable that they never fit to begin with because you were buying suits based off how much your chest measured, rather than what your shoulders measure.
