Tailoring pants without opening pleats?

I have some pleated pants that need to be taken-in in the hip area. Is there a way this can be done without opening up the pleats?

If by hip you mean waist, a tailor can tighten the back seam. However, if made too tight, the pleats will open giving your butt the "baloon effect".

the tighter you make the hips the more the pleats will open.
just grab the sides of the trousers and pull tight. you will see what i mean.
that is unless the trousers are too large a size for you.

this is why pleated trousers are looser than plain fronts.

Not necessarily. To fit correctly, flat fronts must be fairly full to allow the wearer to sit down comfortably and without crotch wrinkles. Pleats open when seated to give extra fullness, so pleated pants can be cut with less fullness for standing.

Yeah, these pants are too big. But after employing your method not a full size too big, I guess.

Actually, the area that is too loose (baggy) is the front (pleat area). I assumed that the only remedy to deal with this was to take in the sides at the hips. Is there a different way to remove some of the bagginess from the pleat area?

I tried this and it turned out horribly. Everything falls nicely except the pleat area now poofs out like a front-butt. Avoid.

Eh? When a waistband is too big, its looseness is all around, not in one location, right? Are you saying the waistband fits but the pleated area below it is too full? In that case the only solution would be to take in more fabric at the pleats themselves (seems to me).

Take in the seat.
