Tailoring Dress Shirts

I understand that tapering the sides of a dress shirt is fairly straightforward, but what about the armpit area of the shirt? Can this area be adjusted much to make it truly fit well? I'm referring to the blue area in the picture below.

If the tailor is taking in the seam on the side they should also be taking in the seam in the armpit area and into the sleeve as well.
