Tailoring and M2M in Bangkok for wedding

Hey guys.

I'm heading to BKK in September with my fiancee for a month in preparation for our wedding next year. Can I please get your assistance with some of the trip details. I want to ensure that it is good value for money.

1. Is Narin Couture still the place for suits, Milan suit for shirts and Rajawongse tailor as a
backup? Can durable tailored shirts still be bought for $50-70 and a good suit for under $1k?
Should I get material from Sampeng market or pick up material from Melbourne or online instead?

2. Which tailor specialises in women clothing (suit, shirts, dresses)?

3. Is it worthwhile to get M2M and maybe OTR clothing in BKK. Are well known brands cheaper
over there? If so, which brands?

4. Any place to get a western wedding dress e.g. maggie sottero?

5. A good hotel close to shopping and transport for around $100 per night.

6. A good place for an overnight trip that is romantic/exotic close to BKK.

I appreciate your help gents!

1. Narin's suits are less than $400... I brought him fabric from Huddersfield which is probably the most popular and economical source of English wool on the internet. If you're getting anything approaching a slim fit, make very, very sure that Narin raises the armholes as high as possible and, if possible, have him fit you with your arms extended out in front of you to ensure mobility. He and his tailor aren't as competent as the West or even HK. I got a slim fit suit made by him, and I had to throw it out because it was unwearable (completely restrictive and immobile)... but to his credit it did look well with my arms at the side. Narin makes shirts too. If I ever went back to Bkk I'd try to find a different tailor, or be more insistent with Narin. Get a thick heavy fabric (tweed) to cover up his tailoring flaws (that a lighter fabric would reveal more).

2. Narin does women's clothing as well, I'm sure there's others.

3. I highly doubt it, you can stroll through Siam Paragon and take a look. Check out their absolutely awesome food court on the bottom floor.

4. n/a

5. Get a hotel on the BTS, you really don't wanna have to take a taxi in bkk.

6. You could splurge on a nice hotel on Koh Samet, or head down to Prachuap Kiri Khan. The latter has really good seafood, no tourists, and a big quiet beach, but is more rustic. You can't really get to the tropical paradise coral beaches if it's only an overnight from Bkk (without flying south).

Fantastic. I really appreciate your help. It'll definitely quicken my search.

I guess I should just a hotel/apartment around Asok Station.

I noticed that you didn't mention Milan Suit. Does that mean that he's no longer good?

Is there a thread/forum in which I should read to get a thorough list of things to consider in making a good suit?

Thanks again

I second Narin Couture.
As for a hotel, at $100 you have heaps of choice. I like these evn if they are a little more than $100.
Ascott Silom Serviced Apartments
Dusit Thani Hotel (look for a special price)
Centrepoint Grande Ratchadamri (serviced apartment and it's pretty gorgeous and 6 mins walk to BTS station.

Which cloth brand is the best value? This will be my first pseudo-bespoked so I'm sure it
won't be anywhere near perfect.

From what I've garnered I know that I should aim for a tweed Super 100-120.

I don't know about Milan Suit. If I were you I'd personally go into their shop and physically ask and show them that you want high armholes. Narin had told me over the phone he could do them but at the basted fitting I realized they were a good 2 inches below the natural armpit, and for some reason he said he couldn't go any higher.

There is no one thread I can think of for you... but from my perspective the best sign of a good suit is a high armhole and very little shoulder padding. Besides that a fitted, slim look with no obvious ripples or fitting flaws will make you look good. You will have to go with half-canvassed in thailand since full-canvassing is only found in hongkong, singapore, etc. This is Narin's suit for me: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g.../glenplaid.jpg If he had just gotten the armholes right, I would have been happy.

That type of fabric is going to be lightweight and airy, but it's going to show every little ripple, dent and flaw. If you're getting budget tailoring I would defer to getting a heavy, thick fabric (like a tweed) since it'll look cleaner even if the tailoring is crappy.

Great, I've joined and looked around huddersfield for suit material. The prices are excellent compared to italian cloth. My concern is that none of the tweed material were in the right colour for a wedding suit. I assume the colour should be charcoal gray/black.

If you think that Narin is unable to produce an adequate suit in super 100/120 should I just go for a M2M or OTR around the $1000 mark? If so can you please suggest a brand?

Thanks

Recently stayed at the Hansar for about $150/night, tho I think rack rate is closer to $300. Very nice, would highly recommend. Very close to BTS. All suites. Very good service and very well appointed. Also just posted on my experiences at Milan Suit in this thread: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=527 Hope that link works. If not, it's the "Bangkok tailors" thread.

Another hotel is the Holiday Inn Ploenchit, which is beside the BTS Ploenchit Station.

First of all, I would like to welcome you in my hometown!

I don't know what to suggest you regarding of your suits because the tailor that suits for me may no longer exist!

However, if you want to stay somewhere in Bangkok, the best place for you would be staying where you can around easily and that would be located closed to BTS, sky train, or MRT, subway.

There is this one hotel that would be of your interest and that is InterContinental Chitlom. It is a walking distance from BTS Chitlom station. Holiday Inn is also right next by if that is your preference.

However, if you want to stay somewhere closed to the center of Bangkok, you can try Novotel in Siam.

If you ask for somewhere that is exotic, my recommendation would be North of Thailand in the town called Pai (Mae Hong Sorn - แม่ห้องสอน) or Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่)

The way I define exotic is totally different from romantic, so I would recommend you to the South of Thailand in places such as Phuket - ภูเก็ต, Krabi - กระบี่ or Koh Samui - เกาะสมุยใ

Southern part of Thailand has been mentioned a lot lately in the pop culture.
When they did the filming of the Hangover II, they went to Krabi in the place called Phulay Bay Resort, Krabi: http://reserve.ritzcarlton.com/phulay_bay/Overview.aspx
