Tailoring a Duffel Coat?

Was curious about this forum's opinion regarding the tailoring of a duffel coat. Does it make sense to pay to make this style more fitted? Specifically, I'm a 42L but slim (10" drop) and dislike all the billowy quilt of material around the waist in an otherwise excellent duffel coat. But I fear the end result may look odd, bulky up top, cinched in the waist.

Your thoughts appreciated!

Most all of my coats are slim-fit but I like some coats, including duffels, to have a bit of drape, especially since I like to wear them over jackets or heavy sweaters. If yours is too full, then of course take it in a bit.

better not, imo. a shaped duffel coat will look feminine.

Good point. To me, a duffel should be roomy.

+1 on leaving it alone. Waist suppression on a duffle just won't look right.

If your duffle coat is roomy, that just means you can wear it over a suit or sportcoat.

Good point. To me, a duffel should be roomy.

how roomy? if i stand normal in my coat it bulges out on the side like in an L shape. if you were to exaggerate the bulge and look at it from an ariel view. I dont want to take it in because of the shape, but I dont want to throw it away, it coasted too much.

The duffel coat should be an easy fit, but not baggy.
It should be fitted over a suit coat or a heavy sweater.
Tell your tailor you want the sides straight, not shaped at the waist.

My gloverall duffel is a very full cut and quite long. It does indeed help with layering, and is the warmest coat I own. A too tight (or too short) duffel coat takes a practical cold weather item and turns it into a fashion item. Which isn't necessarily bad dependant upon your needs I guess
