Is there some unwritten rule that one cannot wear trousers, even casual trousers, with T-shirts? That t-shirts are to be worn only with jeans? Welcome thoughts..

Well, as t-shirts are traditionally considered underwear, it would be "wrong." That said, it is not a look that do you any favours even if you do not care about rules.

Many people wear t-shirts. One could also wear polos.

Not sure I understand the comment about saving money...

Some rather stuffy views thus far - it is possible if a slightly hybrid look. If it suits your feel for the occasion then go for it, chinos might be better than very formal trousers but maybe a black pair would be OK as well.

Rules really are not very relevant and certainly nothing to get excited about.

Not really helpful - T shirts are main stream leisure wear so what they were considered to be 50 years ago has no relevance whatever.

What's not helpful? T-shirts are at most ok as leisure wear for kids, not for grown-ups.

OP, in general you are not going to find a lot of love for T shirts in this subforum. If it is a look you are really interested in, check out the Streetwear and Denim subforum, where T shirts are more viable.

I've seen that done best on thestyleblogger.com

Its one of those combos you can probably only wear in NY, LA, SF, Paris, London, etc.

Can be done with khakis, cords, etc. in a very casual setting - think yard work, walk the dog sort of thing.

If you go for this look, you have a moral obligation to have both a high-quality, well-fitted tee AND a body that can support such a look. If you lack either, don't do it.

I remember when I was 11 years old I wore a tee shirt beneath a blazer a la Miami Vice. My grandmother said I looked like Jed Clampett. Her words still haunt me and I haven't worn the look since.

Then again, this is the same grandmother who accused me of being gay because I ordered a gin and tonic.

I generally wear my tshirts under something else like a polo or shirt but occasionally with jeans. If you are fat, do not wear a tshirt.

^Try gin and soda.

Your grandmother sounds like a metric **** ton of fun.
