If I want to wear a sweater over a polo shirt and not look like a doofus, it's a 1/4 zip mockneck sweater and I pop the polo collar under it. I can't think of another way to do it that would look good.

Not sure of where you'd be doing this, but as a college student, I do it very often and see it very often as well. V neck.

I do it when I run out of normal tshirts. Feels weird, but functionality is most important when you're running late for 8AM classes.

I find the polo collars too soft and rounded to pop over v-necks/crewnecks. Just leave them tucked inside.

A long long time ago, I did this once. Black polo neck inside black crew neck jumper - it was sooo cold so I really had to have the extra jumper. I also wore my full length Armani coat in black; it was very Matrix-esque, although it preceded the movie by a good few years

I don't think this is so bad. I wore a pink polo under a gray cardigan on Sunday, you can catch a slight glimpse of it on my blog.

I wore a white polo over a charcoal v-neck the other day and I thought it looked fine.

A white polo over a charcoal v-neck? Was that a typo?

are you all sure that the OP meant "polo neck" in the US sense? When I read the post, I thought it was asking about "polo neck" in the UK sense (AKA "turtleneck"). I thought the question was about getting that rugged outdoors-y look you sometimes see, like this picture I found using google:
