Sweaters and Ties?

First post all, but long time lurker. Is it appropriate to wear a sweater, dress-shirt and a tie and if so, do I follow normal color conventions?

I do it all the time. But I do have a preferred style of sweater to wear with a tie. I prefer merino pullover sweaters with either quarter zip or button mock neck style. I like the way the neck wings frame the face. I usually wear a button down dress shirt underneath.

I am not a fan of v-necks, except v-neck sweater vests when worn under a sport coat or with a bowtie.

Absoposifuckinglutly. Wear something like that without a jacket for a business casual look, with a jacket for a more dressed up look in cold weather.

It gives you another element to play with, and like a vest in a three piece, it allows you to wear more eye catching colors and patterns becuase less is showing. That goes out the window with a bright sweater obviously.

It really gives you another way to add color, pattern and texture to an outfit.

I prefer the combo when the sweater is v-neck, although I do wear a tie with crew-neck sweater but not as much.

Rarely wore a tie with sweater but as I have to wear a tie to work everyday, Friday's are normally - cotton trousers, shirt, tie and sweater (instead of a suit).

Depends on th sweater - normally you can see the top part of the knot (which is why I do not think crew-necks and ties really work), although with one sweater you cannot see the the tie at all and led to my manager question if I was wearing a tie at all.

I wear it all the time except on Fridays and sometimes for dinner, I prefer the V shaped sweater though it requires a little more effort when choosing ties

Every time I attempt it with my merino v-necks, it looks awkward and feels strangling.

I don't see why it would be any more strangling than wearing a tie without a sweater?

I think it also depends on the drop of the "V" a sweater has. I prefer sweaters with a deeper "V" for this look - shows more of the tie/knot, rather than having to fuss with your sweater throughout the day because it rides up and covers your tie.

I have a wool v neck that unfortunately shrunk a bit too much. The only part of the tie I can see now when it decide to ride up my neck is the tie knot. Makes me sad
