I am looking to update my image this weekend. I am very intrigued by the increasing popularity of sweater vests over a dress shirt. Please...I am a fashion moron, haha, so I am looking to get some advice of what color/pattern vest goes well with a dress shirt. Please give me some advice on how to match a pattern with a color and how to wear the sweater vest/dress shirt combo. Can I wear jeans and dress shoes/converse with them?

Also I like the style of wearing a V neck sweater with a dress shirt and tie, what are your thoughts on this and once more, what colors/patterns go with what?

Thanks for your advice!

1. Sweater vests were for decades the uniform of the nerd. If you want to look like Chuy from Chelsea Lately go right ahead. I'll pass.

2. Shirt, tie v-neck. Too close to my school uniform. Don't forget to make sure your shirt tail hangs out and you really will look like a moron.

I disagree.

Fair Isle sweater vests are an integral element to the Oxbridge/Apparel Arts/Merchant-Ivory/Ralph Lauren tweed n' flannel look. Unfortunately, they've gotten mildly trendy again.

I think a v-neck sweater looks better that a vest, but it's up to you. Start with a plain medium gray vest as it will work with most shirts you have. I like the v-neck+shirt+tie look, but I think it requires dressier pants and dress shoes as opposed to converse sneakers. No tie? Sneakers are fine.

Once you master the gray v-neck, you can venture into other colors. A simple thing to do (although I never do it) is to have a color wheel nearby and choose the sweater color as the opposite from the shirt color.

As far as patterns go, play it safe by starting out with plain sweaters. Then you are free to choose any pattern for your shirt.

I have solid navy, wine, light gray, light blue and wheat (tan). They are all useful.

My trouble is that sweater vests in high quality wool or cashmere don't come in sizes that would be wearable to me under a jacket. I like my regular sweaters to be a touch slouchy, but a vest is a different matter.

Try the firm that I use. I can't remember who they are, alas. Not expesive. Maybe not high quality enough for you.

I don't need anything astounding. I just prefer quality over quantity, particularly when I have trouble imagining ever wanting or needing more than two sweater vests. Dark red and navy blue would cover it.

These are not superfine merino. They are Scottish wool, old world and bit fuzzy/scratchy. The are sized by number like jackets rather than S-M-L so you could get a 28 short or whatever.

So what's the company?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
