i have a trouble with buying sweaters. for almost every single iteam at j.crew i go for items marked "LARGE" but it's kinda weird with sweaters. "LARGE" sweaters have the right lengths for my body but it fits maybe a bit too loosely around my waist and torso. i kinda wanna go for the more fitted look with sweaters but a medium might be too short for me to wear over untucked shirts with jeans.

so, should i go for a large or a medium??

I think you should tuck your shirt in underneath the sweater

Or let your shirt hang out underneath. A sweater should not be long enough to cover an untucked shirt, and if it is, you probably wear a small or a medium, not a large.

If your concern is having a slim fitting sweater, perhaps you should look elsewhere besides JCrew, which doesn't usually carry what one would consider slim fitting clothes. In my experience, simply trying to size down doesn't achieve the fitted look you are looking for because the whole sweater is smaller proportionately with the cut being the same, i.e. not slim fitting.

I think Banana has slimmer fitting wears which can be had at significant discount. Or, there are those "fashion forward" brands carried at department stores like Bloomingdales, but unfortunately, such sweaters are at fashion forward prices.

So to answer your question, if you're set on getting a JCrew sweater, get the one that fits your shoulders, chest, and sleeve length (the actual length of the sweater is not necessarily indicative of proper size). A medium is not a large with a slimmer fit.
