Sweater Alterations: Possible?

I have a couple of v-neck sweaters (one is merino wool, the other a wool/silk/cashmere blend) that seem like they could be more fitted. Is it possible to have a tailor take them in at the sides (there is a seam there)? Has anyone had this done with good results?
