I've been a long time SWD poster and occasional MC lurker and would appreciate advice on starting to dress like an "adult", I recently graduated from school and finally settled on a job offer. I'll be working for a small but growing federal contractor doing some engineering and consulting work that may require extensive time at client sites. I'm fairly tall and slender (6'1/170) and would appreciate suggestions that fit that type of aesthetic. For now I can probably do ~500 for a suit, up to 100 for shirts, I can do ~150 for pants and ~250 for shoes. The dress code seems to be between business and business casual - ie during my interview my supervisor was wearing a shirt and tie but the CIO was wearing a dress shirt and no tie.

+1 to above

and just a couple things to get you started..

if you're in the US, allen edmonds are good shoes and can be found at a decent discount
shirts, online MTM is a good option if you do your research and have time (if not, maybe BB Extra slim fit)
suits try steve smith's classifieds for brooks brothers 1818 suits, or suit supply
pants it really depends on how much of an ass you have LOL i need more roomy pants in the seat (i look for incotex for zegna on B/S) and then i taper them f

Thanks, the 101 guide was helpful in pointing to a style direction but didn't really help with the brand suggestions.

Would I be better off focusing on getting cotton pants for the summer and wool pants in the winter?

I would most likely need something with a roomy seat, thanks for those suggestions.

You could get either cotton pants or lightweight wool pants for the summer, depending on which you prefer the look and feel of. Personally, I would always wear wool pants because I find them to drape better and be more comfortable.

Re wool pants, Brooks Brothers should fit the rear. Jos. A. Banks, too.

Dress shirts from a retailer such as Nordstrom. Almost everyone here recommends Allen Edmonds dress shoes, but try on in person. There are individuals whose feet need something else.

The suit budget should be higher. Plus, information on size is needed. And more free time for anyone to help.
