For a while now, I have been debating on whether or not to take up suspenders. I love the overall look of them but I never truly know when is an appropriate time to wear them. Are they acceptable in a business casual setting and if so would they be fitting for business casual?

Suspenders will also work very well casually with wool or moleskin. Patterned pants can also match great. If you are going to do this right, your suspenders (or Braces) should not have clips but rather hoops to attach to the appropriate inside pant buttons and the pants themselves should not have belt hoops. Welcome to Styleforum.

I disagree.

I think it is appropriate for older gentlemen - just like Tassel Loafers.

Was in Monte Carlo recently. Met some Italian guys in a cafe. The eldest had on blue slacks, Weston 180 Loafers in black, a belt, white shirt, gold Ray Bans and blue suspenders. Looked very good.

Sure.

Get some really wide red ones, with bright shiny clips and preferably with a brand of liquor embroidered on them.

Or the industrial ones that make you look like you're wearing an orthopedic device, or a shoulder holster.

No. Never except with a suit.

I see them with a nice bow tie, pleated slacks and a blazer. Color wise, not too bright but a bow tie that stands out, matching belt and shoes and a nuetral colored blazer. The color suspenders would compliment the color of the bow tie. I wouldnt choose the exact same color bow tie and suspenders wise.

If you're thinking about the color of your suspenders and how it coordinates with the rest of your outfit, you're doing it wrong. They're not meant to be seen, as the jacket is never meant to be removed. Of course they will show occasionally when you're seated or whatever, but they're not part of your outfit really. Thinking about how your braces complement your bow tie is only slightly less ridiculous than thinking about how your boxers relate to your bow tie.

While I agree with your comment that the jacket is not to be removed and the suspenders not seen, it is fairly commonplace to remove jackets upon entering the office. I will put mine back on for client meetings or to go outside of my building, but do walk around the office without a jacket while wearing suspenders.

Lets move as far away as possible from the Urkel territory. I feel like you do have to make sure that the color of your suspenders match every color of your outfit even if they will not be seen.

Only with a suit.

Coordinating is unnecessary. Just don't have them clash with your shirt or tie. Example: I like yellow braces, and I like pink shirts. But not together.

Never wear clip-ons.

Plain colours. Stripes or spots may be acceptable. Cartoon characters etc not.

Braces and a belt should not be worn together.
