super new to blazers - help pick out colors and patterns?

hi again guys,

now this thread is about blazers. i just started a new job as a supervisor in a big company and i changed my wardrobe a little (Ok a lot!)

i just bought the following blazers:
- khaki linen blazer (casual)
- medium gray blazer
- black with medium size stripes - kinda looks like dark gray
- solid black blazer
- and a blackish navy lightly stripped suit (what color shirts to go with this)

note i won't be wearing ties.

i need to put together as many outfits as possible to mix and match blazers with shirts and pants (jeans for Fridays and dress pants for the rest of the week)

i have the following colors of dress pants and tons of dress shirts (and can buy more if i don't have the color):
- black
- dark gray
- light gray
- khaki (light)
- navy
- brown
- grayish with some brown patterns (i always think it is brownish but my wife insists its grayish)

i also have linen khaki pants.

please help me put together outfits and if you have pictures as examples that would be GREAAAAAAT.

Are you incapable of deciding what you like? Surely look about and see what others do then copy if you must. The number of newcomers who seem to lack confidence is growing far too fast.

thanks for your reply GBR. if you have a good style and colors sense, then you are blessed, but not all of us are!
if you have some ideas you can help with that would be greatly appreciated, and if not you can just skip this post!!

as i mentioned i am totally new to blazers and wanted some ideas..there is NOTHING wrong with this. i don't know what is bothering you!

Generally, for odd jackets: pair darker coats with lighter pants, and lighter coats with darker pants. If both coat and pants seem about the same on the light/dark scale, make sure the colors or at least the textures are quite different.

You have no blazers, as far as I can see. Those are all non-blazer odd jackets, plus one suit. I would try to buy a real blazer soon. It will be more versatile than the coats you current have.

You will find it difficult to make the mid gray odd jacket look good. Try to find some cream, ivory, stone, or very light tan pants for that. Your light khaki pants might work, if they are light enough.

The solid black coat needs light gray pants. Anything else will look wrong. Wear the light gray pants you have, and try to find some other pants in black and white houndstooth, black and white herringbone, and black and white glen check. Note that a black lounge coat is really formal/dressy, and pretty much demands a tie if worn in the daytime.

You will find it difficult to pair your navy pants with coats, though they might work with your tan linen coat.

Every man should own a navy blazer; it's the Swiss Army knife of a wardrobe. I'm constantly astonished by how often I wear mine (it will go with all of your trousers except the black, navy, and perhaps brown). Note that the darker the trousers you wear with a navy blazer, the more formal the combination, so charcoal gray trousers with a navy blazer ranks just below a suit in formality.

I prefer smoked MOP buttons on my blazers, but of course YMMV.

Get a navy blazer. It solves every problem ever.

I've got several: structured, unstructured, wool, linen, cotton, lined, half lined, unlined, gunmetal buttons, gold buttons, horn buttons. You cannot go wrong with one and it goes with everything. If you buy ones with different cuts/fabrics/construction then you have a solid go to for pretty much ANY event at ANY place in ANY season. E.g. My unlined, unstructured cotton one I've worn with a shirt and tie, but also over a pair of sweats - their versatility makes them a go to for basically everybody on this forum. (Sweeping generality but it is 'the' staple item)

Apart from expensive shoes, an expensive navy blazer is probably the best value item in sheer money per wear.

And experiment with looks - play around a little - nobody has to know that you tried on 5 different shirt/blazer/trousers combo before you left the house. At first it'll take a while to find combos you like but when you do it becomes 2nd nature.

PS I'd stay away from black blazers - I've never been a fan, there are way more interesting colours you can wear.
