Suitsupply custom suit trouser measurements seem very off

I got “measured” today for a custom suit at SS and had an odd experience. I want a classic, high rise, wider legged trouser (very similar to their Duca pants).

The sales associate said they can try to mimic the Duca silhouette via altering the standard custom trouser measurements (which are based on a slim pant). However he seemed very confused about how to do this and had to ask for help from another associate. After a long discussion and some arguing, the associates formulated a plan for recreating the wider legged, higher rise trouser similar to the Duca…but they didn’t instill much confidence in me after such confusion. I left the store and told them I’d think about it before making the purchase. They told me I could find my size “passport” online in my account.

I just took a look at my size passport and they have my trouser size as a 38L with a waist measurement of 35. I am a 32 waist and they were very aware of this (they kept mentioning it during their argument, they measured me and said I was a 32, I’ve always worn 32” waist pants).

Is there something I’m not understanding about how SS custom works and how they alter measurements? Or should I be concerned? I understand they’re trying to size me up to get the legs wider but I would think they’d still need to use the correct waist measurement…

The idea of taking pants of larger size and making the waist narrower is legit. My friend, who works at SuitSupply, did the same thing for himself. Took size 52 trousers and altered their waist to be size 48, because he wanted wider legs and it's not possible to make leg width adjustments when you do the MTM at SuitSupply. Taking a larger size is the only way.

To me that's a bit concerning. Taking the waist in by that much seems like it would impact pocket positioning and other elements. MTM can be hit or miss at the best of times. Personally I'd walk away and look for an alternative cut.

I want to do the *exact* same thing. However, I realized that the size passport can be constructed by measuring a well fitting pair of pants. I have had plenty of success with Luxire with the copy process, but Luxire is often more expensive than SS for nicer fabric, especially if you want Gurkha trousers - a $30 upcharge. Note that if you do this, you still cannot control the pleat depth on the SS custom pair, but you can do so with Luxire.
