Suits - To vent or not to vent

Alright well I'm a year or so into the professional world and have been looking to find some ebay steals for suits to expand my wardrobe beyond my charcoal suit.

I'm an athletic build and I rather unfortunately bought my first suit and men's wearhouse (overpaid if you will). Don't get me wrong, it's a jones new york 3-button double vented (I believe) and I love it.

However, is it entirely necessary to get a vented suit for someone with an athletic build? This is of course what I was told at the store. I'm just curious - I don't know too much about suits, vents and such just looking for some direction and advice.

Thank you.

Do you plan to sit down while the suit is buttoned?

If yes, get double vents.

I'm curious, have you ever worn a ventless jacket? I own several and have found that the act of sitting (while buttoned) poses absolutely no problem.

And my experience is completely the opposite. I've owned several vintage ventless jackets, and every one was problematic when it came time to sit. That's why all my bespoke jackets have double vents.

+1

And it is not easy to get the keys for the car (or every other thing) out of the pocket of the trouser with a ventless jacket.

Yep, appears to be down right impossible.

I have a ventless Saint Andrews sport jacket on the way. I highly prefer double vents followed by a center vent but if the price is right then I don't mind.

But I prefer the ease of a double vent, more utilitarian. My DJ is ventless though, for tradition's sake rather than comfort.

To my eye, side vents look better than ventless when the wearer is standing and puts his hands in his pant pockets, especially during presentations. With side vents the back of the jacket remains straight and neat, but does not with ventless. I saw two presenters recently, one after the other, where one was in ventless and the other in side vents. It was a noticeable difference.

Ok thanks for all the responses - I've been lurking around this forum for a while now trying to pick up tips on dressing well etc. I typed in jones new york and didn't find many positive reviews unfortunately as tastes seem to be more on the higher end for Raulph Lauren, Brioni, etc which are really out of my price range being a year into the professional world. I'm looking to expand my warddrobe possibly to give myself some more flexibility.

What would be the next step for a suit I suppose after a Jones New York? Also out of curiosity, mine fits great, I've had zero problems with the fabric etc, why are they knocked so much on this forum? Is it the price tag or quality? I understand that cashmere is much much better etc. I'm not necessarily questioning people on this forum, merely trying to understand why.

Thanks again.

Ventless is just not in the trend...that's all. I still have a couple of ventless jackets that I have no problem whatsoever. Afterall, we all wear ventless dinner jacket/tux, don't we?

Com'on, if EG is hearing from some of you, he might come out with a new design featuring triple, or quad-vents.
